Artist Statement
My journey into visual art began as an act of necessity and became a revelation. In 2022, while creating a promotional video for my award-winning poetry collection, Starfish Blossoms, I painted my first canvases to visually interpret the work. That moment opened a portal I had not intended to walk through, but once I did, I found myself immersed in colour, texture, and intuitive storytelling through brushstrokes.
Now, I am in the process of transforming this passion into a lifelong career. In the last few years I have produced a body of work that reflects both my cultural heritage and my growth as an artist. Acrylic is my primary medium, and my themes often guide the form…from the sacred landscapes of Zimbabwe, rich with Karanga cosmology, to the Welsh countryside where I now live, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that fuels my creative energy.
As a bilingual author and publisher, storytelling has always been at the core of my practice. Whether through literature or visual art, I strive to honour the voices and cosmologies of my heritage while carving new pathways for diasporic self-expression. Founding Chitende Fine Art in 2023 marked a deepening of this vision: to explore the interplay between language and image, history and healing.
Every painting I make is a ritual, a reclaiming, and a celebration. Selling my art is not only about sustaining my practice. It is a step toward the life I want to live fully as an artist. I invite you not just to see the work, but to feel it: to touch its textured surfaces, to hear the silence behind the strokes, and to remember.
Guided by my neighbour, a seasoned art teacher with 30 years of experience, I delved into the world of painting, learning the fundamentals on canvas. Through trial and error, I honed my skills, eventually achieving the ability to bring my poetry to visual life in the marketing video for ‘Starfish Blossoms.’
However, my journey did not end there. Inspired by my newfound passion, I continued to explore the realm of painting, drawing heavily from the themes of womanhood, nature, and spirituality that permeate my poetry. Living amidst the breathtaking beauty of the Welsh countryside, my surroundings serve as a constant muse, influencing the vibrant and expressive nature of my impressionist and expressionist art.

All my original paintings are varnished for protection and come with a signed and dated certificate of authenticity.
