The Human Condition is an 8 kg stone mask carved from opal stone, a Zimbabwean serpentine known for its smooth texture and quiet presence. The sculpture explores the idea of masks, not as objects of disguise, but as behaviours people adopt in everyday life.
Some masks are worn to impress, to belong, or to protect. Others are worn because the wearer no longer knows who they are without it. This work reflects on those moments of pretence, when love, intelligence, or purpose is performed rather than lived.
The simplicity of the form allows the idea to remain open. The mask becomes a mirror, inviting viewers to consider not only the façades they encounter in others, but those they may carry themselves.
