A painting of a white maneless lion at a rainmaking shrine. In Shona tradition such sightings are never taken as ordinary wildlife events. They are seen as visitations of mhondoro spirits, especially those tied to royal ancestry, rainmaking and protection of the land. This lion is not considered an ordinary animal but a spiritual being, carrying messages or protection. The white colouring symbolises purity, rarity and divine authority. The absence of a mane makes the lion distinct from normal male lions, marking it as outside ordinary nature and closer to the spirit world.
Mhondoro are guardian spirits of entire regions, lineages, or clans, unlike ordinary vadzimu who mainly look after their direct descendants. In rainmaking ceremonies (mukwerera), elders sometimes report sightings of ghost-like lions in sacred groves or near rivers. These are believed to be mhondoro confirming the ritual or reminding people of their obligations to land and tradition.
